The sanctuary is located at the center of the mangrove forest along the coastal land near Kampung Samawang in Labuk Bay, Sandakan. Part of the trip will be through the graveled roads and jeep tracks of plantation estates. Upon arrival, register and witness the feeding of the unique monkey which is endemic to Borneo. Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary
Sandakan
In the centre of the mangrove forests of Sumawang is the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, where you can see Borneo's indigenous proboscis monkeys. This privately-owned sanctuary located within an oil palm estate gives you the chance to observe these animals up close and personal.

The remarkable males sport big dangling noses, reddish flat-top hairstyles, white tails and markings, and pot bellies. The females on the other hand, are much smaller and have up-turned noses.

A river trip can be arranged to further observe the monkeys or do some bird watching, as hornbills and kingfishers are found in the area. Take a night tour for a chance to see wild boars, flying squirrels, fireflies and crocodiles. The sanctuary also has a lodge with six air-conditioned twin-sharing rooms and a dormitory for those who wish to stay overnight.

Getting There
Travel along Jalan Labuk (heading towards Kota Kinabalu) and turn off at the SPS 3 junction at kilometre 23 (adjacent to Consolidated Sabah Farms). From here, the farm is a further 15km along the gravel road.

The sanctuary also provides transfers, daytrips and overnight stays. You can also go through a local tour operator.

SIGHTSEEING TOUR

Meet at Sandakan Airport (MH2042 ETA 0810hrs or Ak6080 ETA 0800hrs). Sabah Hotel lobby 0830-0900 hrs. Proceed to the Water Village to see houses on stilt above water occupied by native tribes, visit Observation Pavilion and the Central Market. Drive up hill to the Puh Jih Syh Chinese Buddhist Temple, which offers a panoramic view of the Sandakan Bay. Lunch. Transfer to the Airport (MH2709 ETD 1415hrs). (Lunch)

The remarkable males sport big dangling noses, reddish flat-top hairstyles, white tails and markings, and pot bellies. The females on the other hand, are much smaller and have up-turned noses.
